Spending Is the Problem

Just in case there was any doubt that excessive spending is the federal government’s real problem in running up the national debt, former vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan tweeted the following graphic projections:

The revenue projections for President Obama’s desired higher tax rates on top income earners look pretty optimistic, so there should be a lot more red on the chart. Plus, the OMB/CBO/HBC data used to create the chart would also seem to assume that there will be no more recessions in the future, so there should be a lot more red on the chart. The reasons why are discussed at longer length here....

Over 90% of Federal Spending is for one of four items, the other spending is marginal. These 4 items are Social Security,Medicare/Medicaid,The Military and Interest on the National Debt. First, Social Security should be made voluntary(which it technically is now) and then privatized by handing it over to private insurance and annuity companies. Get the Federal Government out of the “retirement” business. Second Medicare/Medicaid should be abolished along with HMOs and instead have fee for service for minor ailments and have Major Medical Hospitalization Insurance issued by private companies for more serious problems. Local governments, counties, religions and charities with volunteer doctors should take over the healthcare needs of the indigent. Third, America should shut down its Empire and end the foreign interventionist wars. Let Europe,Japan and other nations pay to defend themselves. End Pax Americana forever. And Finally by abolishing the Federal Reserve Central Bank along with fiat currency and the Legal Tender Laws America could close down the debt based, interest barring money system and eventually retire the National Debt. This would also allow for the abolishing of the Income Tax whose revenue is primarily used to pay the interest on that debt. In other words the Federal Government,in today’s dollars, should have a total budget of around 500 Billion. Also I would suggest that the War On Drugs be ended, that all non violent drug offenders be released from prison and that drugs be legalized for adults only, such as alcohol and tobacco products are today. Taxing these drug products would provide an excellent windfall for the government. Of course these 4 reforms will probably never occur in my lifetime but the reality is that unless these 4 items are dealt with nothing will change.
